Vermilion Parish has produced 200 Eagle Scouts since 1932.
The Attakapas District is looking for those still living in and around Vermilion Parish. The Boy Scouts of America will hold A Gathering of Eagles, Celebrating Scouting in Vermilion Parish. The catered event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22 at Magdalen Place in downtown Abbeville.
“We want to encourage and recognize what scouting can do in the community,” said Charlene Beckett, a member of the event’s planning committee.
The committee, which also includes Attakapas District Committee member Marty Hebert, Attakapas District Commissioner Charles Dill Jr., Elaine Dill, Attakapas District Executive Craig Overland, and Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza, is in search of as many Vermilion Eagles Scouts as can be located. The committee currently has invites to 85 of the 200.
“We ask that anyone, family and neighbors, who knows any Eagles to contact us,” Beckett said.
The event is not exclusive to Vermilion Parish natives.
“We are inviting any Eagles who live in Vermilion, who may have earned Eagle in another stay, to attend,” Charles Dill Jr. said. “We don’t want to overlook anyone.”
The committee is also looking for unique stories and Scout memorabilia to display. That includes photographs, merit badge sashes, camp crafts, older uniform pieces, troop and patrol flags, patches, letters, among other interesting items.
“We will have some displays up,” Hebert said. “We will have a camp site set up for people to see.”
Anyone interested in attending, sponsoring or volunteering for the event can contact Hebert at (337) 322-8351. Hebert can also be reached via e-mail at
