“Failure
is Not an Option”
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the
Those words now serve as my daily reminder as to the importance of our mission in Scouting. My good friend and council field director Dwayne Jones recently said this (and I paraphrase): “We can go to some of the schools in our districts, rally them, and get a handful of new kids to join Scouting. But what if that future Eagle Scout-doctor or lawyer or leader isn’t in one of those schools? What if he’s in one of the schools that we didn’t go visit? What if we don’t give that kid an opportunity to do something positive in his life?” I let those words settle onto my heart and realized the gravity of what was just said. Scouting has the power to change lives. Scouting has the ability to give its members hope and direction. Behind every number is a young person who has opportunity. Putting it another way, behind every kid is the word “potential.” The potential to shape, mold, develop, and grow the kind of citizen that will be of benefit to society. Not every Scout will be an Eagle, but that doesn’t mean that we should stop short of giving every youth the opportunity to learn to soar like one.
As we go into our spring program and we begin looking towards welcoming new Scouts into our troops, crews, packs, and posts, let us not neglect to extend the Scouting opportunity to every youth and family with whom we come into contact. We never know who’s life we’re going to touch next. Membership will always be a priority in any membership-driven organization, whether it be Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Rotary, etc. Let us not forget why we do this in the first place…to change a life for the better. We must reach out more and more with the program of Scouting. To do anything less would be failure on our part. And just like with NASA, failure is not an option.
